A Leander social studies teacher has resigned amidst allegations she had an inappropriate relationship with a student.

Cathryn Bowland, 27, left Vista Ridge High School last Friday. She had been a teacher since August 2006.

District spokesman Dick Ellis says the incident happened during a school-sponsored trip on Jan. 22.

He says Bowland was seen by other students holding hands with a freshman student.

One of the witnesses also reports hearing an inappropriate conversation between Bowland and the teenage boy.

Ellis said Bowland reportedly put an end to the conversation by saying something like "We shouldn't be talking about things like this."

Once an assistant principal was notified, an investigation began.

Bowland was placed on paid administrative leave last Tuesday, had a meeting with district officials last Thursday then resigned on Friday.

A note went home with every Vista Ridge High School student Tuesday notifying parents about what happened.

Bowland has not been charged with any crime.
