CHESAPEAKE - A former Suffolk teacher has been charged with having
consensual sex with one of her students, police said Thursday night.
Officer Christi Golden, a police spokeswoman, identified the teacher
as Carrie Bishop, 33, of the 3600 block of Radford Circle.
She was on the faculty at King's Fork High School, where she taught
Spanish and was a cheerleading coach.
Bishop, who turned herself in to police Thursday night after being
informed that she was to be arrested, is charged with contributing to
the delinquency of a minor.
Golden said the charges stem from a relationship with a 17-year-old
male student at King's Fork. The incident is said to have occurred at
Bishop's home between August and October of 2006.
Bishop answered the door of her townhouse Thursday but declined to
comment.
"She's no longer an employee," Suffolk Public Schools spokeswoman
Bethanne Bradshaw said Wednesday.
Bradshaw would not say whether Bishop was fired or resigned.
Bishop was put on administrative leave May 11, and that leave ended
Wednesday. The incident was reported to school officials by an adult,
but Bradshaw would not say whether the person was an employee or a
parent.
"As soon as it was reported to us, we started the investigation,"
Bradshaw said.
She wouldn't say whether the student involved had been in any of
Bishop's classes.
Bishop was in her third year at King's Fork.
