JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A teacher who worked with teenage inmates at the
Duval County Jail is accused of having sexual relations with one of
the teens, police said. Investigators said they have been trying to
figure out if the allegations are true, but said the potential victim
is not cooperating with the investigation.
Amy Alice Meyer has become the subject of a months-long investigation
into what might have happened inside the jail.
Over the past year, Meyer taught language arts to juvenile inmates at
the county jail until allegations surfaced that she might have been
having sexual relations with one of the teens.
A police report states that beginning in January, "it was alleged that
the subject (Meyer) engaged in sexual intercourse with the potential
victim on several occasions."
Police received information from another juvenile witness who said
Meyer had been accepting collect phone calls to her house from
students and after listening to jail recordings from the conversations
taking place it appeared that Meyer and potential victim were carrying
on an inappropriate relationship.
"(A witness) told investigators that (Meyer) would send the potential
victim out to another unoccupied classroom to 'go get something.' The
subject would then turn on a movie for the class to watch, and then
should would leave the classroom herself Â… when the subject would
return to class, her face would be flushed and her hair messed up,"
according to the police report.
The report goes on to say that the witness also told police, "while
the class would watch a movie, the subject and potential victim would
sit next to one another underneath a blanket."
After gathering information, investigators set out to question Meyer,
but the teacher's has already attorney invoked her Miranda rights.
When detectives went to the jail to try to question the potential
victim, they said the teen refused to help.
According to a police report, "the potential victim told me that he
didn't feel like a potential victim and that anything they did was
consensual Â… he would rather take the contempt of court hearing than
answer the questions."
As far as Meyer's teaching career, the Duval County School Board said
as far as it's concerned, it's over.
"We sent her a letter in May to not reappoint her for this next school
year. We're on contract here in Duval County, so we're on one-year
contracts. So, she a non-reappoint for next year, and following that
we've also got do not rehire on her," said school boards spokeswoman
Jill Johnson.
Meyer's attorney said they are aware of the allegations and that they
have concerns about the witness who talked with police. They denied
any allegation that Meyer was involved in any impropriety.
