THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
LONDON, Ohio -- A woman who tutored special-needs
students in Madison County pleaded guilty yesterday to charges that
she had a sexual relationship with a teenager she was supposed to be
helping.
Angela Angus Koppes, 38, of Plain City, pleaded guilty
to two counts of attempt to commit sexual battery, both fourth-degree
felonies.
Judge Robert D. Nichols sentenced Koppes to six months
in prison on each charge, to be served concurrently. She also will
have to register once a year for 10 years as a sexually oriented
offender.
She had been charged with two counts of third-degree
sexual battery, and her trial was expected to start today. But after
months of wrangling, she reached a plea agreement with prosecutors.
Union County Prosecutor David Phillips said he offered
Koppes the deal, in part, because the 17-year-old victim is now an
adult and is in a Marion prison serving five years for an unrelated
robbery charge. Phillips said the man wouldn't agree to testify
voluntarily against her.
Phillips was appointed prosecutor in the case because
Koppes' husband works in the Madison County engineer's office.
Investigators said Koppes had sex with the teen twice
between December 2004 and February 2005 while she was his tutor,
assigned by the Jonathan Alder school district.
The boy's mother contacted authorities after Koppes
told her she was in love with her son, detectives said.
Koppes said nothing in her defense yesterday, but her
attorney, Ron Parsons, said she has bipolar disorder and multiple
sclerosis and that both "influenced the situation."
Parsons said Koppes no longer has a teaching
certificate from the state of Ohio.
